On Saturday 8th February 2025, The Christie marked World Cancer Day with a spectacular Night of Neon event, lighting up Salford Quays in a glowing celebration of hope, remembrance, and support. Participants dressed in their brightest neon outfits and took on a 5K glow-in-the-dark adventure, dancing, walking, and sashaying their way through the illuminated route. With the Lowry Plaza as the start and finish point, the event was a vibrant, emotional, and energetic gathering of people all united for a common cause – supporting The Christie and its vital work in cancer care.
One of the volunteers at the event was Andrew Morton, Engineering Manager at Projex Solutions, who took on the important role of a marshal – guiding and directing participants along the route. While this was Andrew’s first-time volunteering for The Christie, he’s no stranger to charity events, having previously supported events for Alzheimer’s and Willow Wood Hospice.
The atmosphere was electric. Thousands of participants dressed in neon colours, adorned with wigs, glow sticks, and flashing accessories. Everywhere Andrew looked, he saw fluorescent pink – on the tram to Salford Quays, among the walkers, and even outside The Lowry Theatre, where an audience leaving a show was met with a sea of glowing supporters marching past.
Beyond the fun and excitement, the event was also very emotional with many participants dedicating their walk to loved ones lost to or impacted by cancer. “There was a really good atmosphere, with people of all ages represented, but at the same time, it was really poignant because so many attending were wearing little messages about why they were doing the event,” Andrew shared.
Andrew’s partner, Tracey, participated in the walk alongside a friend. Both Tracey and her friend are currently recovering from cancer, making the event deeply personal and meaningful. Their participation was not just about raising funds – it was about showing gratitude and solidarity with others affected by cancer.
Music and entertainment added to the energy of the night, with a DJ, a steel band, a rock choir, and various other performances keeping spirits high. The event officially kicked off at 7:30 PM and wrapped up around 9 PM, but the impact of the night will last far beyond the glowing lights.
Reflecting on the experience, Andrew and Tracey both had a great time and said they would absolutely do it again. Their involvement, alongside thousands of others, helped raise much-needed funds for The Christie, ensuring that cancer patients continue to receive world-class treatment and care.
The Night of Neon was more than just a 5K walk – it was a night of unity, remembrance, gratitude, and community spirit. It was a reminder that no one faces cancer alone, and that through support, awareness, and fundraising, we can all help make a difference.
